Learning to drive is a right of passage for every teen. My oldest son recently got his driver’s permit. He is excited to learn how to drive. I am not so thrilled. Having to sit next to him in the car, for the next six months does not sound fun. It sounds scary.
When I spoke with him about driving he said he could not wait to drive alone, with no parent in the car. The idea of him driving alone is frightening. However, the fact he is growing up is the harder concept for me to grasp. My boy is becoming a young man and will leave my home soon. Not for three more years mind you, but soon. It makes me sad to think about it.
I am a huge fan of the musical duo, The Bacon Brothers. The band stars Kevin and Michael Bacon. I have had a crush (like everyone else in the world) on Kevin Bacon since his Footloose days. Years ago I discovered Kevin and his brother Michael had a band. I have listened to their music ever since.
One of my favorite songs of the band is written by Michael. The song is Don’t Lose Me Boy. It is a tribute from him to his (then) teenage son just before he headed out into the world. I thought today I would reprint the lyrics to the song in loving tribute to my Old Boy.
Note: I have not created this video. It is owned by YouTube user Alle Riemen Los.
DON’T LOSE ME BOY
WRITTEN BY MICHAEL BACON
Well you say you’ll climb the highest mountain
In the whole damn world
I think you will yes I’m sure you will
But you may need some guy you know
Down at base camp far below
I could help a lot yes and maybe notDon’t lose me boy
Now that you’ve found your way
Leave me some light of day
So these old eyes can see their way
Off you go and out the door
Don’t you look back any more
Between the pain and the joy
Don’t lose me boy
Don’t you lose me boySo you say you’ll be the next Hendrix
Clapton or Buddy Guy
I think you will yes I’m sure you will
But who you got on that second guitar
Background vocals electric sitar and changing strings
I can do lots of thingsDon’t lose me boy
Now that you’ve found your way
Leave me some light of day
So these old eyes can see their way
Off you go and out the door
Don’t you look back any more
Between the pain and the joy
Don’t lose me boy
Don’t you lose me boyYou’ll probably roll your eyes
And tell me to lighten up
I think I will some day I’m sure I will
But this song is for your mom and me
Just before we set you free
So listen if you can
Boy take it like a man
My Old Boy is not leaving yet, but he is getting ready. I think I better get ready too.
eldest daughter leaving for freshman year at college in 3 and half weeks…it is a very bittersweet time. She is ready to fly…intelligent, confident and witty young woman. My husband and I are not so ready. I keep staring at her, freezing her in my memory. How could this be my baby? Sigh… this post was good
Now driving on the other hand … took her out a few times and then handed the keys to my husband and said I was done. Curling up in the fetal position in the passenger seat was not for me! Good luck!
I drive the boys to school every morning and Old Boy has requested he do the driving in the fall. I shutter at the thought. I like how you say, ’3 and half weeks’ until your daughter leaves. I will be counting the days too when Old Boy heads out. Good luck on your first year of college. Might be time to get another dog.
It seems very far off for me as my kids are younger. Anyway, I can imagine it must be hard to think about. Enjoy him while he is near you and strap on the seatbelt.
I will try, as I cling for dear life.
Ohhhhh….these are such good lyrics. I hope his son appreciated them too. I especially liked the lines: But who you got on that second guitar
Background vocals electric sitar and changing strings
I can do lots of things.
Oh yes, we’ll always be there to do lots of things.
Found a YouTube video of the song and put on my blog. Enjoy!
What a great song! Thanks for posting it for me–or at least I’d like to think that you looked it up on youtube just for me
