Photo Friday – The Sunflower Project
September 2nd, 2011 § 6 Comments
Years ago, my neighbor Alena asked me to care for her young daughter while she attended a weekly meeting. Her daughter’s name is Seleste. Seleste was a delightful toddler and I have had a sweet spot for her ever since.
Yesterday, my little son and I paid a visit to Seleste and her family. I recently contacted Seleste’s family because I wanted to showcase a project Seleste has been working on all summer. It is called, “The Sunflower Project”.
All summer long Seleste has posted photos, with her mom’s help, on Facebook about her project. Starting from seeds, Seleste has grown a beautiful garden of sunflowers in her backyard.
In June, Seleste began the summer long project to grown and learn all about sunflowers. Seleste has been updating the progress through a series of photographs on Facebook. At least once a week, she provides a photo journal of how the sunflowers are growing. I love sunflowers and I have really enjoyed seeiing the weekly changes.
Seleste created a written journal to show how the plants progress each day. The sunflowers took over two months before the first bloom arrived. In addition to her journal, Seleste has also been studying, under the microscope, to learn about the plant structure.
After months of viewing the sunflowers, I knew I needed to pay Seleste a visit. My little son and I loved our tour. Seleste is a natural gardener. In her backyard, all sorts of vegetables and plants are growing…including corn, tomatoes, peppers, and squash.
What impressed me most, is how Seleste has continued all summer long. Week after week, she continues to update her photo journal with new information. It has been wonderful for those of us viewing, because we feel a part of her project.
At the end of our tour Seleste’s family asked if my little son would like to paint his hand print on their patio. We were told only the most special people get asked to do this.
It was a wonderful experience for my little son, but most of all for me. The little toddler I once knew is now a beautiful girl. Just like the sunflowers, I have watched her grow.

It was a very fun experience. Thank you for reading, Lauren.
Love the sunflowers! i don’t remember where i saw it but someone had made a hidden secret hide out for their kids in the garden by planting the flowers in a large circle – it was really cool. loving your blog
The sunflower circle idea reminds me of a green bean house I saw once. Children love things they can grow and hide in. Thanks again, Doreen.
